Transfer Case Inspection and Routine Service Procedures in Norwalk, IA

A vehicle transfer case is a part specific to four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It transfers power from the driveshaft to the wheels as needed for the traction and power expected from vehicles with the four-wheel-drive option. Even though four-wheel-drive is typically associated with heavy truck or SUV models which need the power for towing or traction for off-road driving, some lighter trucks or sedans can benefit from all-wheel-drive for better handling and control during inclement weather such as freezing roads, snow, or heavy rains and the associated flash floods which cause dangerous road conditions.

Why the Transfer Case Requires Routine Service

The transfer case has gears, moving steel parts, inside it. Any time steel parts are moving while in contact with each other as is the case in a gearbox, those parts need to be lubricated. Having oil in the transfer case causes the contact to be more gentle with less friction, which prevents the gears from breaking while also keeping them from overheating. Even though the oil helps cool those moving parts, it does go through extreme variances of heating and cooling. The oil itself and the additives used in modern oils eventually break down after a certain amount of heating and cooling cycles, causing it to be less effective over time. Additionally, over time small pieces of metal can flake off the gears, or in some cases, the internal portion of a gasket or gasket sealer can break down and compost into the oil. Such contaminants compromise the ability of the transfer case fluid to provide the function it was intended to serve.

What Happens if the Transfer Case Isn’t Properly Serviced

Fortunately, if the transfer case isn’t properly serviced it won’t prevent the car from running, as a matter of fact, most drivers won’t even be aware their four-wheel-drive system isn’t working under ordinary driving conditions. Such a statement inherently declares the need for routine transfer case service, because nothing is worse than finding out you don’t have four-wheel drive when you need it and expected the vehicle to provide it.
