Brake fluid is an essential part of your Chevrolet’s braking system. When you press down on the brake pedal, fluid is forced in one direction and fills a chamber in the calipers. This, in turn, puts pressure on the head of the piston and forces it out of the caliper. Attached to the end of the piston is the assembly for the brake pads. As the piston is forced out of the caliper, it presses the pads against the rotor until enough friction is created to make your car stop.
In order for the brake fluid to work well, it must be in good shape. Brake fluid has the ability to attract moisture and over time the moisture buildup in the fluid will affect its viscosity. Viscosity refers to the thickness of the fluid. As the fluid thins because of moisture, it becomes less effective and you will have to press the brake pedal down further to the floor to stop the car. There are a couple of other signs that will alert you to the need to get your brake fluid changed, including:
Gregg Young Chevrolet has certified technicians who are trained and experienced at doing brake fluid exchange services. Our technicians will remove the old brake fluid and put in new fluid rated for your vehicle. The type of brake fluid your car uses can change over time as the car ages and our technicians will make sure your car gets the right type based on its age, size, and whether it has an ABS system or not. Our technicians will then bleed each brake line to remove any air. Finally, they will test the braking system to make sure it is working well before handing the car back over to you.
