In a recent statement, GM Canada president and managing director, Steve Carlisle, confirmed that they will lead the charge in developing a self-driving electric car. The long-term goal is to develop a fully-autonomous car, but the 2017 Volt will have significant technological advancements “deployed as part of a broader test program”, he states. They will be available initially to GM employees who use a car-sharing app, while testing continues. The Canadian Engineering Centre in Oshawa, Ontario, “was a logical place to locate this important work, and is the next step in growing the new mandate of the Center to focus on work related to the Connected Car,” Carlisle said.
